The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
