Major Lessons after the Champions Cup's Initial Set of Fixtures

Following the initial matches of the 2025-26 Champions Cup concluded, we explore the key revelations stemming from the games.

Top 14 superiority has ruled the roost in recent years, with the previous five victors all hailing from France's top flight. However, the first weekend included a number of statement victories from potential challengers.

Bordeaux Appear Primed to Defend Their Title

Current holders Bordeaux Begles were a class apart in this tournament a year ago, dominating Toulouse in the semi-final and then Northampton in the showpiece.

Currently sitting sixth in the Top 14, some have suggested about their chances of defending the accomplishment this year. But, in round one, Bordeaux issued a reminder that they are well-positioned of achieving consecutive championships with a high-scoring win on the road in South Africa.

Faced with a tough assignment at Loftus Versfeld against a strong Bulls side featuring stars like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they were behind 33-22 at half-time.

However, true to their champion status, they unleashed their power in the final 40 minutes, roaring back to seal a 46-33 victory – shutting out the Bulls to zero after the break.

France international machines Damian Penaud and global award contender Louis Bielle-Biarrey each crossed the try-line. Any side with that pair on the flanks has a chance against any competition.

Formidable Bath Appear Equipped of Going the Distance

Bath's only triumph in this competition dates back almost a generation ago. In the years since, they have probably never been more strongly positioned to secure another title.

The defending English Premiership champions are setting the pace in the league after six games and will be looking to transfer that success into the Champions Cup – particularly following a unexpected elimination last year.

Johann van Graan's team looked a very complete and composed outfit in their 40-14 victory against Munster, who are highly placed in the Celtic league.

They marry offensive flair – sealing the extra point within 20 minutes at the Rec – with tough tackling, keeping their visitors at a distance when they attempted a dramatic comeback.

With players including Finn Russell and Ben Spencer in the half-backs and a deep squad across the squad, they are surely genuine challengers for a first European trophy since 1998.

Bath's defining match in the pools last season was in the second round, an agonising 22-21 loss at Benetton with a changed side.

Having secured a league trophy in their history and top in England once more, Van Graan may feel able to concentrate more effort on the Champions Cup now.

Glasgow Deal Sale a Major Blow

You will find strong teams everywhere you look, but their section seems destined to be one of the tightest.

In the competition's present structure, a lot is made about victories on your own turf, which is why Glasgow's triumph at an opponent's ground at Sale on Friday evening might just turn out to be vital.

The Scottish side were 14-0 down after 20 minutes but came back strongly, and two tries early in the second period gave them a precious bonus-point win.

With this result, they provided their prospects of qualification a major lift and, conversely, inflicted a hefty blow to the Sharks.

With the red and blacks – dominant 56-19 victors over the Sharks – and Saracens, who comfortably defeated Clermont, also in the pool, we should be in for high-stakes drama.

And what of Glasgow's old rivals Edinburgh? They turned in one of their best European performances in a long time to stun heavyweights Toulon 33-20, on a fine weekend for Scottish rugby.

Is Ioane the Missing Ingredient of the Leinster Puzzle?

If there's one team you would fancy to be challenging at the later stages of the Champions Cup, it would be four-time winners Leinster.

However in the last few years it has ended in disappointment, as they have promised much but not won the trophy. Beaten finalists three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked overwhelming favourites last season after backing up a 62-0 thrashing of Harlequins in the round of 16 with a 52-0 win over Glasgow in the quarter-final.

It was hoped that All Black star Jordie Barrett would be the missing ingredient to take them over the line, but they were surprised and experienced a stunning upset to Northampton Saints in the semi-final.

Now they are testing another New Zealand import, this time with Rieko Ioane, who claimed a scoring pass on his bow in Saturday's 45-28 success against Harlequins.

Is Ioane the man to return the cup to Ireland for the first time since 2018?

Stormers Appear Equipped to Compete

From the moment the SA franchises entered the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the deepest run achieved is the quarter-finals, and in the last campaign no South African side was able to progress out of the group stage, with several rotated sides fielded.

Is this the year that changes? The Stormers are first in the URC and began their European campaign with a 26-17 victory on the road at Bayonne on Friday.

The words from players and coaches were promising too, with individuals involved speaking of their goals, and the caliber of South African internationals Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse absent for the first match.

The Stormers look the best bet for a South African side to progress far in the tournament, although do not rule out the Sharks and Bulls, who were defeated this weekend but did play the French powerhouses respectively.

Northampton and Pau Serve Up a Memorable Match

There were multiple possibilities for game of the weekend, and the Northampton vs. Pau game was among the best.

Pau have been experiencing a outstanding campaign, spearheaded by Argentine internationals Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and former Wasps scrum-half Dan Robson.

They are currently in second place in the Top 14 and the stadium was buzzing at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
