It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.
New Release Strategy
From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime had a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.
This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two at most releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
